Finished 2 little Tourist Paintings

Deer Mountain

Dolly's House on Creek Street

I live in Ketchikan, Alaska. This is the first stop on the Inland Passage for Cruise ships coming to Alaska. Our tourist street is "Creek Street" which is where the brothels were in the early 1900's, late 1800's. Dolly's house was the famous house of ill-repute. Tourists are now given a tour through it. It is pretty cute actually.

Deer Mountain is a beautiful mountain with a fabulous hike up to a top. It dominates the town.

I am painting in acrylics, this is giving me a difficult time as most of my life I painted in oils and I am having a hard time making the transition.

This is supposed to have similarities

to:

and
Emily Carr

From a photograph by Karin Jurick on the website Different Strokes

I got so caught up in making the skin tones "alive" that I totally forgot to look at the photo. Now that I'm tired of the project I see that I've made her forehead much too low. Sigh. oh well, next year I'll do better. It was a fun exercise. It's great to see what other people have done. Thanks so much to Karin Jurick for her wonderful Website.

Everybody is so realistic with their portraits. sheesh!

A quick and dirty sketch of my assigned photograph, this is fun!
